Why the Room Matters as Much as the Equipment
The best speakers in the wrong room still sound wrong. Understanding your studio's acoustic character is the first step to getting the sound right.
RT60
The measurement that determines how your studio actually sounds.
RT60 is the time it takes for sound to decay by 60 decibels after the source stops. In a dance studio, with hard floors, reflective mirror walls, and minimal soft furnishing, that number can be surprisingly high, and it fundamentally shapes how music and voice are experienced in the space.
A room with a long RT60 sounds reverberant and muddy. Bass frequencies build up in corners. Vocals from a teacher's microphone smear across the room before reaching the back wall. Even a perfectly specified sound system cannot fully compensate for a room that is working against it.
We assess the acoustic character of every studio before specifying a single component, because the room informs every decision that follows.
Practical acoustic treatment in a dance studio is often minimal, a studio cannot be full of absorption panels and still function as a dance space. But targeted placement of even a small amount of absorption at first-reflection points, combined with intelligent speaker positioning and EQ calibration, can transform how a room sounds without changing how it looks.

What is the floor area and ceiling height?
Room volume determines the Sound Pressure Level requirement and the number of speakers needed for even coverage. Getting this right first prevents over- or under-specification.
What disciplines are taught in this studio?
A hip-hop or contemporary class needs different audio character to a ballet or barre class. Understanding the primary genre shapes EQ targets and volume requirements.
Will a microphone be used for teaching?
A teacher's mic requirement changes the entire signal chain, mixer specification, speaker placement, and feedback management all depend on how the mic will be used in the space.
Is this space used for filming or live performance?
Recording and performance environments need higher audio quality, lower noise floor, and often a separate monitor or in-ear system for performers, very different from a pure teaching setup.
Are there neighbors or adjacent rooms?
