Cleaning & Maintenance Guide
Learn how to properly care for your Marley dance floor to keep it safe, clean, and long-lasting for every performance and practice.
First-Time Setup
-
Prepare the subfloor: Ensure it’s dry, smooth, and dust-free.
-
Unroll the Marley mat: Let it relax and flatten for 24–48 hours before taping or dancing on it.
-
Secure edges: Use specialized Marley tape to prevent movement and tripping hazards.
-
Initial cleaning: Wipe the surface with a pH-neutral vinyl cleaner and let it dry completely.
Regular Cleaning Schedule
-
Daily: Sweep or dry mop the entire floor to remove dust, hair, and particles. Dirt can reduce grip and cause premature wear.
-
2–3 Times a Week: Use a damp mop with warm water and a small amount of pH-neutral cleaner. Do not soak the floor.
-
Weekly Deep Clean: Gently scrub using a soft brush or microfiber mop to lift residue and maintain consistent traction.
Removing Marks & Stains
Over time, your Marley floor may get marks or stains from shoes, rosin, or tape. Here’s how to treat them safely:
-
Scuff Marks: Rub gently using a clean tennis ball or white eraser.
-
Sticky Residue: Use warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap. Avoid alcohol or solvents.
-
Grease or Oil: Sprinkle cornstarch on the spot for 15 minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.
-
Ink or Dye: Contact a flooring professional—do not scrub aggressively as it may damage the surface.
Disinfecting the Floor
Especially in studios and shared spaces, disinfection is key. Follow these safe steps:
- Use a vinyl-safe disinfectant or a mild solution of 1 part white vinegar to 10 parts water.
- Spray lightly onto the mop (not directly on the floor) and clean in sections.
- Allow the surface to air dry completely before dancing again.
- Never use bleach, alcohol, or ammonia—they can break down the Marley surface and dull its finish.
Long-Term Maintenance Tips
- Keep outdoor shoes off the dance floor—use designated studio footwear only.
- Place mats at studio entrances to reduce dirt and moisture.
- Do not use harsh scrubbing pads, steam mops, or vacuum heads with brushes.
- If storing the floor, roll it up with the dance side facing outward and store in a dry, cool space.
- Inspect seams and tape regularly to prevent peeling or trip hazards.
- Deep clean every 2–3 months for high-traffic studios or after performances.
Restoring Traction
If your Marley floor becomes slippery over time:
- Mop with clean warm water only—residue buildup from soaps can cause slickness.
- Use a dedicated dance floor cleaner designed to restore grip.
- Ensure air humidity is moderate; overly dry air can reduce friction.
